Laboratory Assistant – Workington Mill, Cumbria

Introduction
Are you detail-oriented with a passion for science and quality? At Holmen Board and Paper, we are looking for a Laboratory Assistant to support our operations at Workington Mill. This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative team where your work contributes directly to sustainable production and high-quality products.

Your next workplace?
Workington Mill is located on the west coast of Cumbria, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes including the Lake District National Park. At Holmen, we combine innovation with sustainability, producing high-performance paperboard used worldwide. Our mill is a modern, safety-focused environment where teamwork and continuous improvement are at the heart of everything we do. You will be part of a skilled laboratory team that plays a vital role in maintaining product quality and supporting production processes.

Your future challenge
As a Laboratory Assistant, you will support the testing and analysis of raw materials, in-process samples and finished products. Holmen offers a workplace where you can develop your technical skills, gain hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment and contribute to sustainable industry practices.

Your main areas of responsibility:

  • Conduct routine laboratory tests in accordance with established procedures

  • Prepare and handle samples from production processes

  • Record, analyse and report test results accurately

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure it is calibrated and functioning correctly

  • Support quality control processes and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental standards

To succeed in the role
We are looking for someone who is methodical, reliable and eager to learn. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and you take pride in maintaining high standards.

You will ideally have:

  • A background in science (e.g. chemistry, materials science) or relevant laboratory experience

  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills

  • IT skills and the ability to document results accurately

  • Good communication skills

  • An understanding of health and safety practices in a laboratory or industrial setting

Experience in a manufacturing or industrial laboratory environment is an advantage, but not essential—full training will be provided.
