At Holmen’s paper mill in Braviken, this culture is visible in everyday actions – in how we greet one another, collaborate across roles and take responsibility for safety, results and each other. Site Manager Ulf Danielsson describes the culture as both close‑knit and performance‑focused: we care about one another, while setting clear goals and moving forward together.

A closeknit way of working

When we describe our culture as close‑knit, we mean that there is a genuine respect and care for one another. We acknowledge each other, step in where support is needed and view mistakes as part of learning and development. This creates a sense of trust and belonging – while reinforcing accountability and shared ambition.

“There is an openness that allows room for learning, a respect for others and a strong willingness to support one another. We care – about the business and about each other.”

Creating psychological safety through honest dialogue

An open and inclusive work environment makes it possible to speak up – including about risks and unsafe behaviour. At Braviken, 96% of employees state in the 2025 employee survey that they feel confident speaking up if they see unsafe behaviour. This reflects a strong safety culture rooted in trust and responsibility.

Giving honest feedback is an expression of care – for colleagues, for the workplace and for long‑term performance.

Culture as a foundation during change

When change is required – whether through efficiency initiatives, new ways of working or cost reductions – a strong culture becomes essential. It requires courage to make difficult decisions, shared responsibility for the bigger picture and leadership that maintains clarity and engagement even when conditions shift.

“We need to safeguard both safety and performance, while creating a sense of security. That becomes especially important during times of change.”

At Braviken, leaders work openly to build understanding around change. Decisions are clearly communicated, the reasoning behind them is explained, and dialogue continues in teams. This creates direction and involvement – allowing culture to support progress rather than become a barrier.

Collaboration that drives continuous improvement

Over time, collaboration between mills and units has strengthened. Work that was once more siloed is now increasingly shaped by shared responsibility, knowledge‑sharing and collaboration across functions. Ideas, experiences and improvements are exchanged naturally.

In a flat organisation, the path to leadership is short, making it easy to raise ideas in everyday work. At the same time, structured systems such as suggestion platforms and deviation reporting ensure that engagement and insights are captured and acted upon. This creates a culture where participation, ownership and influence are part of daily work.

Development and careers – Growing together

At Holmen, we believe in long‑term development. People should be able to grow – in different directions and at different stages of life. Ulf Danielsson’s own journey, having held seven different roles within the company, is one example.

Internal mobility is encouraged, new challenges are supported, and those who thrive in their current role are equally valued. Through internal processes and tools, we work systematically to identify and develop potential – always with sustainability and the individual in mind.

Safety and wellbeing A shared responsibility

Safety is a core part of the Holmen Way. Over the past decade, safety work has developed significantly – covering both the physical and psychosocial work environment. Leaders take active responsibility for risk prevention, follow‑up and continuous improvement.

Safety topics are regularly discussed in leadership forums and workplace meetings – from protective equipment to how we identify early signs of stress or ill health and act responsibly.

Looking ahead – Performance through trust and collaboration

Looking forward, Ulf highlights three keys to future success: collaboration, safety and performance.

“Holmen is a closeknit company with a strong focus on performance and that balance is something we must continue to build on.”
