Who am I?
Hello! My name is Ellen, and I’m currently spending my second summer working as a reel operator at Hallsta Paper Mill. I live in Uppsala, where I studied for a Master of Science in Engineering at Uppsala University until this summer. During the spring, I completed my studies with a thesis project in the field of energy at Hallsta Paper Mill.
What a day at work looks like for me
A typical workday for us reel operators can vary quite a bit. We work a three-shift schedule, which means that during a working week we alternate between morning, afternoon, and night shifts. Every shift, regardless of the time of day, begins with a shift handover where we review how the previous shift went.
Our main responsibility as reel operators is to rewind the paper coming from the paper machines into smaller rolls according to customer requirements. We monitor the production of paper rolls and inspect their quality before they are shipped to customers. In addition, part of our daily work involves solving any problems or operational disturbances that may arise to ensure that production runs smoothly.
No two days are the same. Unexpected challenges always come up, and solving them together as a team is an important part of the job.
Why Holmen?
Last summer, I applied for a summer job at Holmen because I wanted to work in industry. I had heard about Holmen before and decided to apply. I really enjoyed my time here last summer, which is why I chose to come back again this year.
My time at Holmen has been both enjoyable and educational. The best part of the job has definitely been my colleagues. From day one, I was welcomed with open arms. I’ve had the opportunity to work in a team where collaboration is highly valued and encouraged, which means there is always someone to turn to when questions or uncertainties arise.
I’ve also really enjoyed working shifts. At first, I was a little worried about adjusting to night shifts, but it has gone much better than I expected.
What will you take away from this experience?
Above all, I will take with me the feeling of having been part of a great team. It is clear how important it is for everyone to work together to keep production running smoothly. Through this experience, I have also learned a lot about problem-solving and troubleshooting. Every day brings new challenges that you need to solve together with your colleagues.
I’m also taking away valuable experience from the industry, especially the paper industry. Before I started here, I knew very little about how paper is produced. Today, I have a much greater understanding of the work behind the paper used in things like the books I read.
