TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

Lightweight and uncoated – up to 22 percent lighter

The products in the Holmen VIEW range are lightweight uncoated papers (LWU) that have all the advantages of fresh-fibre based papers. Tactility, relative stiffness and great opacity. But they also have the added bonus of a surface that ensures great print gloss and awesome image reproduction. Properties that up until now have been associated with coated paper grades. Paper based on fresh fibre has higher bulk. This means that it’s more voluminous and that the paper weighs less while retaining its thickness.

Holmen VIEW is available in different grammages so that you can choose the right feeling for your publication. Choose Holmen VIEW instead of a standard LWC paper. Your magazine can become up to 12 percent lighter and still keep its thickness. If you use Holmen VIEW Matt for the same purpose, you can reduce the weight with as much as 22 percent.

The bulk effect gives you a strong advantage compared to using paper based on recovered fibre: You can buy fewer tonnes. You will get the same print surface! You can also buy the same amount of paper in tonnes and add more pages – or copies – to your publication.

BULKY MATH

A better total economy

Keep the thickness of the paper and loose weight. With a high bulk paper you can keep the same thickness and still get a lower grammage. But how much less can the paper weigh and still feel as thick?

energy- and resource-efficient

Now even thicker

Holmen VIEW is available in different grammages and the latest additions are 65 and 70 gsm.

Since the paper is produced in a TMP (thermomechanical pulping) process, the elasticity of the fresh fibre is preserved. This enables a voluminous paper, which means you will get a light, yet thick publication with low distribution costs. Think of this feeling when you turn the pages ... Smooth and sturdy combined.

How to calculate savings on paper

Holmen VIEW vs LWC recycled

LWC stands for light-weight coated papers.
LWC recycled papers usually have a bulk of 0.9 cm3/g
Holmen VIEW has a bulk of 1.1 cm3/g

If we compare a 60 g/m2 LWC recycled to Holmen VIEW and want to find a grammage with the same thickness, we get: 60 x 0.9 / 1.1 = 49 g/m2

The closest grammage in the VIEW range is 50 g/m2. If we then divide the grammages to see the difference, we get: 50/60 = 0.83

This means that you save 17% in weight!

That is 17% less paper and your product will still be as thick as before.

Holmen VIEW Matt vs LWC

LWC stands for light-weight coated papers.
The LWC paper in this example has a bulk of 1.3 cm3/g
Holmen VIEW Matt has a bulk of 1.4 cm3/g

If we compare a 60 g/m2 LWC to Holmen VIEW and want to find a grammage with the same thickness, we get: 60 x 1.3 / 1.4 = 56 g/m2

The closest grammage in the VIEW Matt range is 57 g/m2. If we then divide the grammages to see the difference, we get: 57/60 = 0.95

You save 5% by choosing VIEW Matt. Also, just like in the previous example, your product will be just as thick as it would be if printed on the LWC. It just weighs less.

.. and get more for your money

Get more pages, or more copies

Example: 56 page magazine

Let's say you are using standard LWC paper that weighs 60 g/m2 and 103 g per copy. Compare it to Holmen VIEW that weighs 50 g/m2 and 73 g per copy.

Say that you are using 5000 tonnes of paper per year ...

5 000 tonnes divided by 103 grammes equals 48.5 million copies if you use the standard LWC paper.

5000 tonnes divided by 73 grammes equals 68.5 million copies if you use Holmen VIEW 50 g/m2.

The difference in how many copies you get from 5 000 tonnes of paper would then be 20 million copies. So by switching paper to Holmen VIEW in this example, you can publish 20 million more copies at the same cost! And the magazine will still be as thick as before.

Get a thicker product

Would you like your end product to be thicker? Let's have a look at the numbers with an example.

Let's say you are using a standard LWC paper that weighs 50 g/m2 and has a bulk of 0.9 cm3/g. You switch to Holmen VIEW that weighs 50g/m2 and has a bulk of 1.1 cm3/g.

LWC 50 g/m2 has a caliper of 50 x 0.9 cm3/g = 45µ

VIEW 50 g/m2 ha a caliper of 50 x 1.1 cm3/g = 55µ

The ratio between the thickness of the two equals 55/45 = 1.22

So by switching to Holmen VIEW your end product will become 22% thicker!
