More inspiration, but less environmental impact

Did you know that we don't harvest a single tree to make paper? We produce paper from residual products from the sawmills, along with trees from thinning and the parts of the trees that can't be used for sawn timber.

We don't grow trees to make paper

Paper is a by-product in a circular process where all resources are taken care of responsibly, and managed forests are better for the climate than unmanaged forests. If the forests were not managed, the carbon reservoir they build up would be released again in the short term.

One of the greatest climate benefits from the forest comes from the replacement of fossil materials. Buildings made of wood instead of steel and concrete are a good example of how carbon will be stored for a very long time, and the emissions from production of other materials are avoided.

Circularity is key. We work to build a sustainable future, making progress through nature and technology. Thus we aim to consistently process and repurpose all by-products from Holmen's activities.

With a circular approach, we make the best use of every tree, not letting anything go to waste, while safe-guarding the biodiversity and long-term resilience of the forest. And when a tree is harvested, we always plant at least two new ones.

To you this means a clear conscience, knowing that the paper is made of residual products; that we contribute to a smaller carbon dioxide level in the long run; and that your magazines weigh less, resulting in lower cost, lower environmental impact, and less weight for distribution.

This is why we keep striving to develop innovative graphic papers that bring great possibilities, reading comfort and tactile feel – and more print surface.

production

Efficient processes

Even though paper production is generally energy intensive, we are constantly striving to minimize our energy use and optimize our processes to minimize negative effects of production.

We recycle heat and steam and re-use it in several steps of production. The surface water that we use is purified and then tested to ensure that it is clean and safe for the ecosystem. It can then be released clean back into the Baltic sea.

We work with fresh raw materials and store wood chips from the neighbouring sawmill away from sunlight, to reduce the need for bleaching chemicals.

By using the benefits of the fresh fibre, we make a paper that is bright, light and bulky, with great printing properties, without being brittle or dense.

Emissions

Our carbon dioxide emissions

We work actively to cut our own carbon dioxide emissions, and since 2005, we have reduced the CO2 emissions from our paper mills with 95%

Energy

Fossil free energy

We only use fossil free electricity when producing our paper. We produce our own renewable hydro power and windpower at hydro power stations, and wind farms in Sweden. The production covers over 50% of Holmen’s energy use. For more information about our energy production, visit the Holmen Energy website

Recycling

A sustainable raw material

Our paper makes up a sustainable raw material to the recycled fibre industry. A paper fibre can be recycled up to seven times. When they can no longer be recycled as paper, the rejected fibres are used for biofuel, replacing fossil fuels.

The next generation of magazine paper

More sustainable. But less boring.
