Why Holmen makes a difference

Holmen Board and Paper is a containerboard industry supplier big enough to make a difference, but also small enough to develop and initiate change. Even though Holmen is more than 400 years old, our friends say we are fast moving. We're brave enough to challenge traditions.

The wood we use to make paper is a by-product from sustainable forest management. Everything we do is traceable, sustainable and recyclable.

Your boxes will be made from fresh wood fibres in our high-yield thermomechanical pulping process. The mechanically separated wood fibres give key benefits to the paper sheet. The containerboard components we produce are stable, strong and thick – yet lightweight. This makes them very suitable for packaging with a low environmental impact.

We lead the way towards a smaller carbon footprint and an environmentally sustainable position for the containerboard industry.

When you compare the CO2(eq) emissions/tonne of paper from Holmen's paper mills to all other paper mills in Europe you will see the difference.

Holmen 143 kg CO2(eq)/tonne of paper
Average containerboard mill in Europe 838 kg CO2(eq)/tonne of paper

At Holmen we set out early to optimize our production processes from a climate perspective. Since 2005, we have reduced CO2 emissions from our paper mills by as much as 95%. We use only fossil-free electricity and we reuse energy in many steps of our production. This is why our our carbon emissions/tonne of produced paper is so low compared to others.
