Responsible and long-term

Sustainable forestry

Many interests have to coexist side by side in the forest – forestry, reindeer husbandry, hunting and outdoor recreation. At the same time the forests provide a habitat for animals and plants. Holmen practises sustainable forestry that balances these interests.

How we manage our forests

Holmen’s guidelines for purchasing wood

Holmen endeavors to ensure having as good a picture as possible of the origin of the wood. We have the following requirements when purchasing wood. Holmen only buys wood from Natura 2000 sites if the seller can present a valid felling application and necessary permits.

Holmen does not purchase wood which:

  • Comes from woodland key habitats in Sweden according to the Swedish Forest Agency definition and methodology.
  • Comes from forests that are protected for nature conservation reasons.
  • Comes from ancient forests, that is to say layered natural forests of differing age with ample presence of old, large trees and ample dead wood in various stages of decomposition.
  • Is felled illegally.
  • Is sourced from genetically modified trees.
  • Comes from areas in which traditional customs and civil rights are actively impeded.
  • Comes from High Conservation Value Forests.
  • Comes from natural forests that have been converted to plantations or other land use.

Certificates

Holmen applies certified systems for forest stewardship. The systems are integrated into the business and reviewed annually by internal and external specialists.

Holmen is one of Sweden's largest forest owners. We are also one of the country's largest buyers of wood.

Every year, we procure more than 11 million cubic metres of wood. Most comes from private forest owners or other Swedish forest companies. The wood is delivered to the Holmen Group's own production units, other forest industry operations and local sawmills.

Holmen Forest’s subsidiary, Holmen Mets, purchases wood from state-owned and private forests in Estonia.
