Sustainability reports

Holmen has an integrated annual report that combines our financial reporting with parts of our non-financial reporting, in the form of a sustainability report. Other elements of our sustainability reporting can be found here on our website. Our reporting follows the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

About our sustainability reporting

Holmen's Sustainability Report consists of the annual report and parts of the web; Sustainability, Investors, About us. Read more in our GRI-index.

The reporting is published annually, as part of the annual report, with the most recent sustainability report published in March 2019 and relating to the 2018 financial year.

The sustainability information presented is based on the sustainability issues identified as essential in view of the business that Holmen conducts, and on the statutory permit requirements set out in the environmental legislation in the countries in which the Group operates.

The sustainability report refers to the period 1st of januari to 31st of december 2019.

The sustainability report includes Holmen AB and Holmen's five business areas Forest, Timber, Paper, Paperboard and Energy and associated subsidiaries, which are presented in the annual report 2019 p. 75.

No changes have taken place during the year in Holmen’s organisation, corporate structure, ownership or supply chain. The sustainability reporting has been subject to review by Holmen’s auditors. See Auditors Report below.

Key sustainability topics

In 2018, Holmen conducted a root and branch materiality analysis to establish our role in how best to achieve our purpose of creating a sustainable future. Work on the materiality analysis included both internal and external stakeholders, with the results of the analysis providing the basis for the development of Holmen’s Group-wide sustainability work, which has been distilled into three focus areas:

  1. Contributing to a better climate
  2. Helping our customers towards a sustainable business
  3. Stay committed to our employees and our local communities

During 2019, no new materiality analysis was performed, since the materiality analysis performed during 2018 is still relevant.

Holmen's business concept is to own and add value to the forest. The forest holdings form the basis of the business – an ecocycle in which the raw material grows and is refined into everything from wood for climate-smart building to renewable packaging, magazines and books. The forest is managed to provide a good annual return and stable value growth while our production operations are run with a focus on profitability and greater value added.
