Environmental and energy policy
Holmen's environmental and energy policy contains principles for the Group's environmental activities and covers the aspects that are of relevance to Holmen and its stakeholders.
The Group's CEO, as well as the heads of the business areas, have overall responsibility for the environment. Operational responsibility is held by mill managers and forest managers. The Group's head of environmental affairs coordinates environmental efforts and ensures that the environmental and energy policy is applied. Climate issues are mainly dealt with by the Group Technology Staff and the Group management. The Group management follows up the Group's climate and energy targets. The Energy Council makes decisions on hedging electricity prices, as well as on electricity certificates and emission allowances. This Council consists of representatives from the relevant business areas and Group staffs.
All the Group's mills have environmental permits containing conditions regulating emissions to air and water. The environmental authorities regularly inspect operations at the mills. Holmen's various mills submit an environmental report to the authorities annually. Forestry operations are supervised by the Swedish Forest Agency.
Environmental management systems
Certified environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 are applied at practically all units and in forestry operations. Practically all production units have quality management systems that have been certified in accordance with ISO 9001. Linghem Sawmill was acquired in 2017. These management systems will be introduced at the sawmill, and will then be included in Holmen Timber's certificates.
Energy management systems
Certified energy management systems (ISO 50001) are in place at all units apart from Linghem Sawmill. The sawmill will introduce such a management system, and this will then be included in Holmen Timber's certificates.
Holmen's forestry is certified in accordance with the international criteria issued by PEFC™ and FSC® (FSC-ID).
There is chain-of-custody certification at Holmen Skog and at most of the Group's mills.
Auditing of certification
All certified systems are regularly checked by external, certified auditors. This also applies to the certifications that exist for wood traceability.
A code of conduct for suppliers is used in order to clarify Holmen's expectations and demands with regard to its suppliers. A system for appraising suppliers of goods and services is in place. Environmental responsibility, quality issues and social aspects form part of the appraisal. The code of conduct is included in all new supplier contracts. The code increases the focus on social responsibility, with a view to ensuring good conditions for everyone who works in Holmen's value chain.
Holmen is using an external partner, EcoVadis, to follow up supplier compliance with the code in the areas of human rights, health and safety, the environment, business ethics and purchasing. The evaluation is tailored to the size of the supplier in terms of turnover and number of employees, and the supplier's exposure to risk in terms of its geographical presence.
Holmen has been affiliated to the International Chamber of Commerce's Business Commission on Sustainable Development for many years. www.icc.com
