Holmen owns and refines the renewable raw material forest through a business model that covers the entire Group and is almost entirely circular. Circularity means that renewable resources are used, reused, recycled and ultimately energy-recovered so as to avoid final waste.
Holmen's forestry is certified, which means that all timber can be traced to its origin from sustainably used forests.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, Holmen's waste to landfill has fallen sharply, and today only 0.7% of the by-products and waste generated in the operations go to landfill. The vast majority of Holmen's waste is recycled or used as energy in our own operations.
For many years, Holmen has been working actively with nature conservation, which aims to contribute positively to biodiversity.
Holmen's goal is for all naturally occurring species to survive in the forest landscape. We forgo forestry or conduct active nature conservation at 20% of the forest area.
We also restore the environment around our mills, which has resulted in the previously negatively affected ecosystems being restored.
Our fresh fiber based products provide the waste paper industry with the necessary addition of raw material in the form of fresh fiber from sustainably used forests produced in modern use that safeguards the the biodiversity.
For the production plants in Sweden and the UK, the supply of water is good. The amount of water used in production decreases steadily as a result of increasingly efficient methods and equipment. Nearly 100 percent use surface water from lakes and watercourses.
The environmental situation in the waters outside Holmen's factories has during the last 40 years been considerably improved through new process technology and technical measures.
Holmen participates in industry-wide environmental research to investigate measures which leads to constant improvements in the environment.
By replacing plastic products with cardboard products, we also reduce dependence on fossil raw materials while reducing the amount of plastic waste that can end up in the sea.
The absolute majority of the energy Holmen uses is fossil-free. Above all, the production of thermomechanical pulp is extremely energy demanding. The proportion of electricity produced by our own hydropower is significant and our own production of electricity from biofuel and wind power has increased in recent years within the Group.
Holmen uses large amounts of energy. We have certified energy management systems at our units in the Group and have programs to streamline the use of energy.
Holmen's business areas are responsible for the transport of products from the mills to the customers. Holmen Skog organizes the wood transports to the industries from the Swedish forest and from the importing countries. The timber transports in the UK are organized by Holmens mill in Workington. For transport of other raw materials and consumables, the responsibility lies with each supplier.
Holmen works systematically to meet requirements regarding the use and handling of chemicals. Chemicals are necessary in the manufacture of paper and cardboard to, among other things, give the products specific properties. Some chemicals are used in large quantities, while others only occur in small quantities.
Holmen regards work concerned with discontinued operations to be an important part of its sustainability efforts. Some of the Group's discontinued sites contain contaminated land, requiring studies that assess risks to the environment and health. Here you find more information about Holmens work to deal with soil contamination at discontinued sites.
The Group's investments and measures to reduce the use of fossil fuels and thus the emissions of carbon dioxide have proved to be profitable in several ways. Among other things, through Holmen's ability to sell emission rights, electricity certificates, origin guarantees and energy in several different forms, but also through cost savings.
Here you can find information about this year's environmental and energy goals, water work and environmental activities carried out on our business units.
Holmen's environmental work is carried out in accordance with ISO-certified environmental and energy management systems, and is also governed by the conditions set by environmental authorities, which also check compliance with these conditions. The certified management systems contain environmental and energy targets that are regularly reviewed and tightened to achieve continuous improvements.
