Sustainable business objectives

We aim to create value that stands the test of time while contributing to a better climate.

Our sustainable business strategy

2,7 million tonnes carbon dioxide

In 2019, our carbon dioxide operations in the atmosphere decreased by 2.7 million tonnes. Our ambition is that the climate target should be in line with the Paris Agreement and follow the model for Science Based Targets.

Holmen and the climate

Global goals for a sustainable development

Holmen is an export company and part of Sweden’s primary industries.

With high carbon absorption and exports of climate-smart products, our contribution to sustainable development is global.

The challenges and the direct impact we have on the environment and people are largely local.

Holmen and Global goals for a sustainable development

Objective work environment

Health and safety continues to be a priority issue for Holmen. Group management has appointed a working party consisting of the mill managers in the respective business areas. The team initiates activities and procedures, sets targets and key indicators, and follows these up on an ongoing basis, reporting back to Group management.

Holmen as an employer

Safety a priority

The goal of Holmen's safety work is to achieve an injury-free business for the employees.
A secure work environment is always high on the agenda and is continuously followed up at management level.
Holmen's forest unit is certified according to PEFCTM and FSC® (FSC-ID) and all producing units are certified according to OHSAS 18001, which means that the group conducts a joint systematic work environment work.

A zero vision for accidents

The number of accidents per million hours worked increased to 5.7 in 2019 from 4.9 in 2018. The dominant causes of accidents are slipping, tripping and pinching. Cuts and lacerations have fallen during the year thanks to measures put in place, but slips, trips and pinch accidents have increased.

In recent years, we have successfully managed to reduce the number of accidents and despite this year’s rise to 27 (24) incidents, efforts are moving in the right direction.

This year’s rise shows how important it is for us to continue to take a farsighted approach, focused on our vision of zero accidents.

Holmens work environmental policy

Objectives in line with EU objectives

Holmen's environmental targets for sustainable development are in line
with the activities proposed by the European Commission which aims at tackling the ongoing changes to the Earth's climate.

Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the EU has adopted climate targets for 2020 and 2030. The EU’s total emissions are to be reduced by 20 per cent by 2020 and by 40 per cent by 2030 compared with 1990. At the end of 2018, the EU presented a long-term climate strategy with the goal of zero net emissions by 2050.

Holmen's operations are characterised by renewables in raw material and energy, recovery of energy and fibre, new products, and raw materials and products that bind carbon dioxide and serve as substitutes for materials that have an impact on climate.

Holmen’s ambitions in the area of climate and energy are therefore in line with the sustainability goals formulated at global, European and national level.
