Holmen's industrial activities require a permit from the environmental authorities in the country concerned. Operations are subject to supervision by the environmental authorities. The certified management systems are regularly checked by external, certified auditors.

All Holmen units hold the permits and certificates required for their operations. In addition to this, there are a large number of certificates for various types of management systems.

The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)

The EU's IPPC directive (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) was for many years a foundation of EU environmental legislation.

2013 marked the entry into force of the EU’s Industrial Emissions Directive (IED). The new legislation entails more stringent requirements for using the best available technology. Holmen has investigated the extent to which operations at the pulp, paper and paperboard mills need to be adapted in order to meet the tightened emission requirements by October 2018. The environmental status of the mills is good and all the mills except the one in Workington already largely meet the new requirements. Work is under way in Workington to determine what action is required for the mill to meet the requirements concerning discharge of process water.

Holmen applies certified management systems for the environment, energy, quality and occupational health and safety. Holmen Skog is also environmentally certified, which guarantees that Holmen's forests are managed to approved standards for nature conservation while safeguarding social and cultural assets.

ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 50001 and ISO 18001 are international standards for environmental management, quality management, energy management and health and safety issues.

PEFCTM (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an international system for environmental certification of forestry.

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) is an organisation that works to ensure that the world's forests are managed in a way that is acceptable in environmental, social and economic terms. Certification takes place in accordance with criteria issued by FSC® (FSC-ID).

Chain-of-custody certification enables wood used at the certificated units to be traced back to its origin.

Certificates for management systems, PEFCTM, FSC® and chain of custody can be found on this website
