Holmen's industrial activities require a permit from the environmental authorities in the country concerned. Operations are subject to supervision by the environmental authorities. The certified management systems are regularly checked by external, certified auditors.

All Holmen units hold the permits and certificates required for their operations. In addition to this, there are a large number of certificates for various types of management systems.

The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)

2013 marked the entry into force of the EU's Industrial Emissions Directive (IED). The new legislation entails more stringent requirements for using the best available technology. Holmen has investigated the extent to which operations at the pulp, paper and paperboard mills need to be adapted in order to meet the tightened emission requirements by October 2018. The environmental status of the mills is good and all the mills except the one in Workington already largely meet the new requirements. The mill in Workington is investigating the process-related measures that in combination with a biological treatment plant will see the process water emissions requirements met. The environmental authorities have granted the mill an exemption whereby the mill is to have invested in measures to ensure that the emission requirements are met by 2021.

Certifications

Holmen applies certified management systems for the environment, energy, quality and occupational health and safety. Holmen Skog is also environmentally certified, which guarantees that Holmen's forests are managed to approved standards for nature conservation while safeguarding social and cultural assets.

ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 50001 and ISO 18001 are international standards for environmental management, quality management, energy management and health and safety issues.

PEFCTM (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an international system for environmental certification of forestry.

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) (FSC-ID) is an organisation that works to ensure that the world's forests are managed in a way that is acceptable in environmental, social and economic terms. Certification takes place in accordance with criteria issued by FSC®

Chain-of-custody certification enables wood used at the certificated units to be traced back to its origin.

Certificates for management systems, PEFCTM, FSC® and chain of custody can be found on in the certificates section

The years given in the table are the years when the certification was first issued.
The certifications mean that procedures are in place for planning, implementation and follow-up, as well as measures to enable continuous improvement in the work on the various management systems. Certifications can be viewed on the Holmen website – www.holmen.com/certificates

1) Holmen's forest operations are certified in accordance with environmental management system ISO 14001:2004. All the facilities at which wood raw material is used have chain-of-custody certification.

2) The certifications include the production unit in Strömsbruk and operations at Skärnäs Terminal.

3) Joint certification for the two sawmills from 2011.
