Iggesund Paperboard will shortly be advertising about 20 white-collar jobs at Iggesund Mill and for central staff functions at head office. The company is recruiting for positions as business developers, logisticians, controllers, engineers, project managers and a range of other section manager and group manager positions. The effect on the labour market in Hudiksvall is comparable to about 500 jobs in Stockholm.
“This is the result of the organisational review, IBIF, which we began last spring,” explains Olov Winblad von Walter, Director, Iggesund Mill. “IBIF stands for ‘Iggesund Mill in the future’ and we believe we need this staffing in order to remain competitive for a long time to come.”
The final union negotiations over the new organisation were held last week, when it also became clear which job positions must be opened up to external applicants. Iggesund Mill is in a somewhat unusual situation – the mill has some overstaffing and must therefore reduce its employee numbers but at the same time it must also recruit to replace workers who will be retiring in the next few years. Within four years 150 older employees at Iggesund Mill will retire.
About 850 people currently work at Iggesund Mill and the aim has been to create a new organisation totalling 740 employees. One important task for many of the older workers now approaching retirement is to manage the necessary skills transfer and to participate in the project work.
“Much of our expertise exists in the form of our employees’ knowledge and experience, and this is something that must not be lost in our approaching generational shift,” Winblad von Walter added, emphasising that this is a priority issue.
“But it’s also important to convey to the older workers who will soon retire that their contribution here has been important – that we regard their expertise as valuable.”
Iggesund Paperboard is part of the forest industry group Holmen and manufactures high-quality paperboard at mills in Iggesund and Workington, England. Iggesund Mill is the company’s production unit in Sweden and also includes the paperboard plastic-coating and laminating operations in nearby Strömsbruk.
