We catch up with Uno Lausen on the phone. He has just landed in Amsterdam for an annual international industry meeting on packaging. An experienced sales veteran who has been working for the company for 33 years, Uno Lausen is sales director at Iggesund Paperboard in the US. He is now responsible for sales in the North American and Canadian packaging market, as well as the graphics industry in Canada.

Initially Uno, who grew up in Linköping in the middle of Sweden, intended to be an engineer. “I went to technical college but, after studying marketing at university, I got a job as a sales assistant for a transport company in Germany.” In 1978 he returned to Sweden to start working for Iggesund Paperboard. “My German skills came in handy and I was soon sent to Switzerland to help build up Iggesund’s sales there.” A few years in Iggesund and Gothenburg followed, involving sales to Norway, Denmark and Iceland. In 1994 the post taking responsibility for Iggesund’s sales office in the US was advertised. Uno thought the job looked attractive. “What drives me is the desire to create results. And Iggesund Paperboard was facing an exciting challenge in entering the American market.”

The sales office employed two people at the time but, under Uno Lausen’s management, it now has a team of seven. “My three best arguments for Invercote? Best, best and best,” laughs Uno, who thinks that Invercote is the Rolls-Royce of paperboard. And brands such as Chanel, Estée Lauder, Clinique and Apple would agree. “We signed our first contract with Estée Lauder in 1999 and have gradually increased sales. Today Estée Lauder uses Invercote in 90 per cent of its perfume packaging,” says Uno Lausen.

2011 WILL HOPEFULLY be the year when wholesalers and graphic artists in the US and Canada discover the benefits of Invercote. This spring will see a major sales campaign in the US. As for Uno Lausen, 2011 will probably be his last year at Holmen. North America is huge and he spends much of his time travelling. Also he and his partner decided to stay living in Southport when the sales office moved to Lyndhurst in New Jersey in 2000. In Southport they live close to the sea, with golf, sun and swimming on the doorstep.

“It’s a 100 kilometre drive to the office and I spend a lot of time in the car. Age is starting to take its toll. I have been delighted to represent Iggesund out in the world, but I will probably be retiring in 2011. After 33 years, I’m quite looking forward to it.”
