Anna is an environmental engineer at Iggesund Mill:
“I work to reduce our impact on the environment”
Anna’s route into the company was via a summer job and the trainee programme. Now she is employed in the environmental department and enjoys working with a renewable resource.
“As an environmental engineer, I run projects and studies linked to the external environment. I keep track of official regulations and am in contact with production and the different units. At the moment, we’re planning for a water saving project. I’m also involved in a sludge project, which is much more fun than it sounds. We’re looking into alternative ways of reusing the sludge.”
After several years of summer jobs at Iggesund Mill’s environmental lab, Anna ended up as a trainee at the environmental department. The trainee programme ran from September 2009 to midsummer 2010, during which time she also got to follow projects at other units within Holmen.
“It was enormous fun and I learned so much. During my time as a trainee, I built up a broad network of contacts that I now find extremely useful in my environmental work.
“My job is exciting because it is so varied. I do have certain routine tasks every week, but apart from that anything can happen. It’s a great challenge.”
What is Holmen like as an employer?
“I like the fact that it’s a relatively large company, with good scope for networking. There are also opportunities to move around and try other jobs if that’s what you want to do. It’s a flat organisation that I find refreshingly down to earth.”
What is the best thing about your job?
“I need variation to keep me happy, and I get that here. It also feels good to be working with a renewable resource. We’re working to reduce our environmental impact, and many reports show that nature is actually recovering. That’s a great thing for me, with my environmental background.”
