Logistics with sustainability in focus

Efficient, responsible logistics support paper and paperboard production from start to finish. We handle transport for wood, chemicals, and spare parts, while delivering finished products worldwide. We ensure the right specification reaches the right place at the right time, while continuously improving transport to reduce environmental impact.

Supply and demand planning

The planning of our logistics has its starting point in our strategy. It's all about working long-term with sales plans and forecasts to secure capacity in our production as well as in the logistics channels. We usually talk about Supply & Demand Planning - balancing the market demand and our production capacity.

In many aspects it refers to a "reverse planning" - to "do the math" from when the customer wants the delivery and going all the way back to our own operations. If we do this the proper way, we have the best chance to deliver the right volumes to the customer, when they want it and in a cost-effective and sustainable way.

Operating environment

It might sound easy, but looking at the market today, the picture is rather complex - with many customers, located all over the world, following different laws and regulations, and all with high demands on quality and "just-in-time" deliveries.

This means that we as paper and paperboard supplier need to be flexible, responsive and reliable, in logistics as well as in our production, while keeping a close eye on sustainability and cost-efficiency.

Shipping

Modes of transport

Our paper and paperboard are transported by sea, road or rail and often by a combination of two or more transport modes to the final destination. A combined transport is often referred to as an intermodal transport, and could for example be a container that is shipped by boat, and then switched over to rail or road transport for the final leg of its journey.

Process

Logistic process

To start from the very beginning, everything originates from the long-term business plan, stretching over a three-year period. After that we have annual sales plans, monthly forecasts, order planning and production planning on the respective machines, and in the end call-off orders from the customers. Each step of the way serves to optimize production and delivery to customer, as cost-efficient and just-in-time as possible, without ever compromising on sustainability.

Sustainable transports

Although the preferred choice of transportation is vessel or intermodal, using trucks and lorries cannot be avoided entirely. Therefore, we have high demands on the carriers regarding CO2 emissions, environmental ratings and regulations in connection with the transport procurement.

Fossil-free fuels

The demands on the carriers have had effect. In 2019 we reached a level of approximately 70% fossil-free fuel for domestic deliveries. Naturally the goal is 100% which we plan to reach in 2030.

Safety on the road

Sustainable transport means more than avoiding CO2 emissions. Safety is also an extremely important factor in delivering our products in a responsible way. Producing thousands of tonnes of paper and paperboard that are delivered near and far, our mills see many vehicles come and go every year. And each delivery should be safe. With that in mind, there are clear contractual terms for the procurement of transport services. The rules that apply to consignments arriving at the mills are part of the customer agreements.

There is a mandatory safety procedure that requires all drivers to identify themselves and their load, and to wear a reflective vest and safety shoes. Anyone failing on any of these criteria will be refused entry to the paper mill.

The sobriety initiative

In addition, there is an alcohol testing procedure, where sample breathalyser tests are carried out for product shipments as well as incoming goods. The initiative increases safety inside the gates with its zero tolerance. It also benefits road safety and supports social responsibility in the long term.
