Holmen’s ecological landscape plans provide an in-depth description of the company’s forests and their natural assets. They contain guidelines on how to plan areas set aside for nature conservation, and how the forests are to be managed in the long term in order to preserve existing assets and create new ones.
Set-asides and conservation-oriented silviculture in Holmen’s forests are based on local ecological landscape plans and their data on the forest. Collectively, the local ecological landscape plans cover Holmen’s entire forest holdings.
The ecological landscape plans are living documents. The plans need to be constantly updated as forests change, new knowledge is gained and inventory data improves.
Core purposes of the ecological landscape plans
- To give a landscape perspective on conservation of natural and cultural assets
- To provide underlying data for calculating harvests
- To act as an aid for internal and external information
