Plastic coatings

To attain specific properties, paperboard is coated with plastic to combine the mechanical properties of the paperboard with the barrier and sealing properties of plastic or foil and film. Molten plastic is applied using an extrusion process to paperboard as a thin, smooth layer of uniform thickness. The choice of material is determined by the desired properties.

Product description

PE is a Polyethylene barrier coating suited for applications where moisture barrier properties are important, such as for cups or packaging for frozen foods, meat products, chocolate, and more. The PE coating also provides a simple yet efficient way of sealing the package.

PE coatings can be single-sided or double-sided. When one side is coated, it provides a good moisture barrier from the inside, and when both sides are coated, it provides a good moisture barrier both inside and out. The polymer is heat-sealable and available in black, white, and brown-pigmented versions upon request.

PE properties

Tolerances Methods/Remarks
Added grammage (g/m²) 11.15.18.20 +/- 5% ISO 536
Added thickness (µm) 12.16.19.21 - Calculated value
Surface smoothness (µm) 5 (Typical) - ISO 8791
Surface tensions (dynes/cm) ≥ 42 - ISO 8296
Adhesion 5 (Typical) ≥ 4 Internal
Pin holes (no/m²) 0 (Typical) - PTN 8-70 (modified)

The surface tension level can be affected after delivery by conditions beyond our control. Regarding Adhesion, the scale ranges from 1 to 6 (6 = the best possible adhesion on the concerned surface).

Holmen recommends a maximum 1 (one) year time limit, from delivery, for board in storage. For paperboard with barriers or foil lamination, the recommended storage time is no longer than 6 (six) months due to the declining effect of any surface treatments.

The above recommendations are only valid if the product is stored in its original wrapping.
