Why is our SC-paper a smart choice?
SC-paper stands for super-calendered paper. But what does that mean? And how can someone say that their SC-paper is both smart and climate-smart?
The ultra-light distribution
Nowadays, distribution cost can make or break a direct marketing campain. Get more bang for the buck by making your folders or leaflets as lightweight as possible while still creating the full impact. An SC-paper – slim, smooth, low-grammage – can achieve just that.
The natural gloss
A super-calendered paper comes with a natural shine. Calendering is a process where the paper is pressed between two hot rollers under high pressure with added steam. The process is not unlike ironing a shirt. It is used to change the properties of the paper surface and to give it more gloss. The process is mechanical and the paper is uncoated.
A paper always includes a certain amount of filler and pigment in the paper-making recipe. What is it then that is so unique about Holmen UNIQ? The secret is in the primary ingredient, the strength and elasticity of the fresh fibre. It enables the use of very low grammage paper when desired. The result is super-light, smooth and glossy paper.
The fresh-fibre advantage and low total cost
Holmen UNIQ and Holmen UNIQ Extra are produced from wood fibres that are used for the first time in a thermomechanical pulping process (TMP). The stiffness and elasticity of the fresh fibres give our papers a strong advantage: a higher bulk.
Thanks to the bulky properties, the paper is more voluminous and weighs less while retaining the qualities that come from thickness. This means you can choose a lower grammage, starting from 37 gsm. It will still meet the same quality standards for opacity, image, and colour reproduction. This means you can save on paper, while also reducing distribution weight.
The smaller carbon footprint
By switching to Holmen UNIQ or Holmen UNIQ Extra instead of standard SC-paper, your products can be up to 16 percent lighter while maintaining the same thickness.
When you use paper with higher bulk, you will buy fewer tonnes for your production. You will still have the same print surface. Alternatively, you can buy the same amount of paper as before and add more pages or copies.
When you buy less paper, you will also achieve a smaller carbon footprint – provided, of course, that the paper is manufactured using low‑carbon processes, as in Holmen's paper mills. The fact that the raw material is sourced locally from sustainably managed forests and co‑located sawmills also helps to keep the environmental impact low and the footprint down.
